A bustling hub of brass, copper, paper goods, and street food in Old Delhi.
Chawri Bazaar, established in 1840, is one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi. Located west of Jama Masjid, it was originally famous as a hardware and brass market and later expanded into copper and paper products. Today, it is best known as India’s largest wholesale market for wedding cards, paper goods, and decorative items. The narrow lanes are lined with shops selling everything from traditional brass and copperware to modern stationery, making it a vibrant blend of old and new.
Beyond commerce, Chawri Bazaar is steeped in history. Its name comes from the Marathi word chawri, meaning “meeting place,” as it was once a site for public gatherings. The market’s proximity to Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk adds to its cultural significance, and its bustling streets offer a glimpse into the living heritage of Old Delhi.
Early morning hours are recommended, as temperatures are cooler and crowds fewer. Certain areas may temporarily restrict access during prayer times.
