A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the architectural precursor to the Taj Mahal.
Humayun’s Tomb, located in Nizamuddin East, Delhi, is one of the most remarkable examples of Mughal architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Commissioned in 1565 by Hamida Banu Begum, the widow of Emperor Humayun, it was designed by Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas. The tomb was completed nine years after Humayun’s death and became the first substantial Mughal garden tomb in India.
The monument is set within a grand charbagh (four-part Persian-style garden), with pathways and water channels symbolizing paradise. Built of red sandstone with white marble inlay, the mausoleum is topped by a striking double dome. Its symmetrical design and grandeur influenced later Mughal structures, most notably the Taj Mahal. The tomb also houses the graves of several Mughal rulers and nobles, making it a significant historical site. In 1857, it became the refuge of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah II, before his capture by the British.
Early morning hours are recommended, as temperatures are cooler and crowds fewer. Certain areas may temporarily restrict access during prayer times.
