A centuries-old bazaar overflowing with colors, aromas, and flavors of India.
Khari Baoli, located near Fatehpuri Masjid at the western end of Chandni Chowk, is one of Delhi’s most iconic markets. Established in the 17th century during the Mughal era, it takes its name from a stepwell (baoli) that once existed here. Over time, it grew into a bustling hub for the trade of spices, herbs, and dry fruits.
Today, Khari Baoli is recognized as Asia’s largest wholesale spice market, with shops selling everything from turmeric, chili, and coriander to exotic saffron, dried rose petals, nuts, and teas. The narrow lanes are filled with sacks of spices stacked high, creating a sensory overload of colors and aromas. For centuries, traders from across India and beyond have flocked here, making it a vital part of Delhi’s commercial and cultural heritage.
Early morning hours are recommended, as temperatures are cooler and crowds fewer. Certain areas may temporarily restrict access during prayer times.

Khari Baoli is located near Fatehpuri Masjid, at the western end of Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. The nearest metro station is Chandni Chowk (Yellow Line), from where the market is a short walk or cycle-rickshaw ride.
As a public market, there are no formal rules, but visitors should respect local customs. Bargaining is common, so be prepared to negotiate prices. Cash is often preferred, though some shops accept digital payments.
The lanes are narrow and crowded, so wear comfortable shoes and keep personal belongings secure. Be mindful of pickpockets in busy areas. If buying spices, check for freshness and authenticity—saffron and dry fruits are premium items, so compare across shops. Visiting in the morning is ideal to avoid peak crowds and experience the market at its liveliest.
