Pracheen Hanuman Mandir

A revered temple believed to date back to the Mahabharata era, dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

New Delhi, India

History & Significance

The Hanuman Mandir at Connaught Place, also known as Pracheen Hanuman Mandir, is one of Delhi’s oldest and most sacred temples. Tradition holds that it is among the five temples in Delhi linked to the Mahabharata period, said to have been established by the Pandavas. The present structure was rebuilt in 1724 by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber, who also constructed the Jantar Mantar nearby.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the monkey god revered for his devotion, strength, and protection. Its sanctum houses a self-manifest idol of Hanuman, making it a powerful site of worship. The temple is especially vibrant on Tuesdays and Saturdays, when devotees flock here to offer prayers, chant hymns, and participate in aarti ceremonies. Its central location in Connaught Place makes it both a spiritual and cultural landmark in New Delhi.
