Qutub Minar – The Tallest Brick Minaret in the World

A towering symbol of Delhi Sultanate power and artistry.

New Delhi, India

History & Significance

The Qutub Minar, located in the Mehrauli area of South Delhi, is one of India’s most celebrated monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Standing at 72.5 meters, it is the tallest brick minaret in the world. Construction began in 1193 under Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, and was later completed by his successors, including Iltutmish and Firoz Shah Tughlaq.

The minaret was built to celebrate Muslim dominance in Delhi after the defeat of the last Hindu kingdom. Its five tapering storeys are adorned with intricate carvings, verses from the Quran, and decorative motifs. The surrounding Qutub Complex includes other historic structures such as the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, Alai Darwaza, and the famous Iron Pillar of Delhi, which has stood rust-free for centuries. The Qutub Minar is not only an architectural marvel but also a cultural symbol of medieval India’s confluence of faith, power, and artistry.
