Raj Ghat – The Eternal Flame of Mahatma Gandhi

A serene memorial marking the cremation site of the Father of the Nation.

New Delhi, India

History & Significance

Raj Ghat, located on the banks of the Yamuna River along Mahatma Gandhi Marg, is one of Delhi’s most revered memorials. It marks the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated on January 31, 1948, a day after his assassination. The memorial consists of a simple black marble platform inscribed with Gandhi’s last words, “Hey Ram”. An eternal flame burns at one end, symbolizing his enduring legacy of truth and non-violence.

The site was designed by Vanu G. Bhuta, with landscaping by Alick Percy-Lancaster, and is surrounded by lush gardens. Over the years, world leaders and dignitaries have planted trees here, making it not only a place of remembrance but also a living testimony to Gandhi’s global influence.
